Adaptation Finance: the Adaptation Fund NGO network

Indigo is a partner in the Adaptation Fund NGO Network, hosted by Germanwatch. In the context of this process, Indigo is following the international debate of M&E on adaptation while also observing the national implementation of projects funded by the Adaptation Fund in South Africa.

Adaptation Network (South Africa)

Indigo is serving on the Steering Committee of the South African Adaptation Network and Bettina Koelle is currently chair of the Adaptation Network Steering Committee.

Bettina Koelle is representing the Adaptation Network on the Steering Committee of the National Implementing Entity in South Africa (SANBI) and on the Technical Expert Working Group for M&E and adaptation.

Livestock Monitoring

Local farmers in the Suid Bokkeveld have decided to monitor the condition of their sheep during times of extreme climate. With extremely cold winters and very dry and hot summers,ti is important to understand how different weather situation are affecting livestoc, especially sheep. 4 women monitors are now monitoring the behaviour of their livestock and their physical movements in the second consecutive summer. Weekly weighing and condition assessment of 30 sample sheep complements this monitoring process.

This project is supported by START and the WWF Nedbank Green Trust and will be publising a Livestock and climate change hand book by early 2016.

Building local adaptive capacity

This project includes a range of activities to support local climate change adaptation practices in the Suid Bokkeveld. These include Adaptation Knowledge Exchange visits, regular climate change preparedness workshops, publishing learning stories in the Adaptation and beyond and regular training activities. It also includes a long term process of participatory water monitoring on farm level.

Facilitation of a Climate Change Adaptation Network

Facilitation of a Climate Change Adaptation Network

Indigo and EMG jointly facilitated a workshop to facilitate a reflection process on a possible Adaptation Network for South Africa. Taking into account that this is becoming a pressing national issue and that synergies and a more coherent approach are urgently needed, a range of stakeholders met in Johannesburg 18 June 2009 to discuss the possibilities.

The decision was taken to establish the South African Adaptation Network, and Project 90x2030 offered to host the secretariat.

A task team was established to support the secretariat in the next steps of formalizing the network.
